A group of graduates, quite successful in their careers, got together to visit their old college teacher. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Before offering his students coffee, the teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups-porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking and cheap, some exquisite and expensive-telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: “If you noticed, all the nice-looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the place which your problems and stress come from.”

Be sure that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. And then you began eyeing each other’s cups. Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee.”

The book is going to celebrate its birthday this August. It began exactly half a century ago. And it’s always one of the best selling books in the world.

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive(欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, some might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!

He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state

lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents(对手) says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” that’s true.

However, and honest statement would have been, \"During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

A. One hundred dollars. B. Two hundred dollars. C. Three hundred dollars. D. Four hundred dollars.

( ) 2. We may infer that the author believes people should . A. buy lottery tickets B. make use of half-truths.

C. not take anything at face value. D. not trust the Yucky Company.

( ) 3. How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive? A. one B. two C. three D. four

( ) 4. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Using half truths is against the law. B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.

C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache. D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

( ) 5. Which of the following best expreses the main idea of the passage? A. He’s really a big loser!

Every morning, the newspaper chief editor(主编) holds a meeting with the reporters. They discuss the main events(事件) of the day. Reporters are then sent to cover the events.

As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one’s homework”.

At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day’s paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one

story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the news desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.

The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.

Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing(印刷) the

One afternoon, in Paris, I took a trip to an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view (看) of some great paintings of excellent artists.

A young couple looking at the paintings in front of me were talking non-stop. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. In fact, I was surprised at this man for putting up with her everlasting speech. Bored by their noise, I moved on.

I met them several times as I moved through those rooms of art. Each time I heard her voice, I moved away at once.

I was standing at the museum gift shop buying some cards when the couple walked to the exit. “He’s a brave man,” said the shop assistant. “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. But he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”

It explained the non-stop talk! A sudden sense of shame came to my heart for what I was thinking just now. “But what does he get out of the art?” I asked.

“His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”

At that moment I realized what is patience, courage and love. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person who can’t see and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness change his love towards art. 阅读理解 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) D

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.

From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often; we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.

Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside

me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty for years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns!

When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.

Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.

Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating.

Can you see the rabbit’s tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its sound. It has given them a signal and makes itself look fierce.

This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is. Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes. We have something that no animals have---a large number of words which have the meanings, information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have. ( ) 31. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Animals do have a language like that of human beings. B. It’s every student’s bad dream: exam time. During the last three days of the term, we had six exams. My easiest exam was math. All of its questions were from earlier exams.

The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I would fail it. It asked about lots of things we never studied in class, though we could use our textbooks. And there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed at many of them. But my teacher said that I did well in it.

In the career planning and computer applications(职业规划与电脑应用)exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation, a book report and a class evaluation(评价). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.

I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay(passage)about books we have read in class. But I didn’t study hard enough.

At our school, we can “test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take exam. If they pass, they don’t have to take that class. I tested out in both computer and health classes.

Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes would go on for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it is over, and now it’s the summer holiday.

For my classmates, it will be two and a half months for fun without school or homework. But I am a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parent do with their kid’s free time: more homework. ( ) 41. How did the writer pass the biology exam? A. He checked the biology exam paper carefully.

Dear boys and girls,

May I have your attention, please?

After the intense final examinations, we are going to visit the Science Museum on October 1 and we will go there by bus.

The visit can make us get to know the modern science and lead a more colourful life. What’s more, we can relax ourselves after busy study.

On the other hand, there are some rules you need to pay attention to. First, you should get to the museum on time. During the visit, we must stand in line and keep quiet in the public. In order to visit carefully, you’d better not take your mobile phones. Be sure to take away the rubbish when you leave. Finally, we will gather at 5 p.m. at the gate of the museum. Hope you can enjoy yourselves that day!
