MY FEELINGS ABOUT PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Pride and Prejudice was generally considered one of the most

successful works of Jane Austen. The novel was full of charming and delicate comedy, and was known for its humor and wit. We can easily find a vivid description of any kinds of people in this novel.

The author described four marriages in this novel. But the mainly

love story is between a rich proud young man Darcy and the beautiful and intelligent Elizabeth Bennet. None of the daughters of the Bennet family can inherit the estate of the family for it has been entailed upon the nearest male heir, William Collins. To make up for it, Collins, considered to be a preposterous suitor, intends to choose Elizabeth as his wife. After Elizabeth rejects his proposal, another young man called Darcy, proposal to her. Elizabeth has prejudice against him because she thinks that he has nothing but pride. As a result, she rejects again. After many twists and turns, Elizabeth realized her blindness, prejudice and absurdity. Mr. Darcy changed his attitude too. Misunderstandings disappeared and they happily united. The other three marriages are described at the same time. Jean, the older sister of Elizabeth, lives a happy life with Mr. Bingley, yet they have gone through some frustrations. We can see that there marriage is the combination of love, through it is a traditional love story, and it can still grasp the reader’s eyes. Lydia, one of the younger sisters of Elizabeth, elopes with Wickham, who is a windbag. They don’t lead to a satisfying life at last, because Wickham doesn’t love Lydia, he doesn’t want to burden the responsibility. Charlotte, the best friend of Elizabeth, married with Collins for a comfortable and cozy life. Both of them don’t share love but marriage itself. The last two marriages are not successful.

Being the main characters of this novel Elizabeth is the most

intelligent and quick-minded daughter in the Bennet family. Unlike her families, she can make some useful and rational judgment towards one thing. She doesn’t think that a marriage without love would lead a happy life. So, when she heard her best friend Charlotte was engaged to Mr. Collins, she felt surprised or even angry. But she is not a person to leave nothing to be desired. She has prejudice against Mr. Darcy. When it comes to Mr. Darcy, we can see that he is a rich and noble man. Because of his noble status, he behaves very proudly and overly conscious. So, when he first proposes to Elizabeth, he dwells more on how unsuitable a match she is than her charms and beauty. But, after her rejection, he gradually realized that his attitude should change. So, when Lydia elopes with Wickham, he tries to rescue Lydia and the entire Bennet family from disgrace. This is a process of misunderstanding and understanding. Elizabeth has prejudice against Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy is a pride man to some degree. So, this is the reason why the novel called Pride and Prejudice.

What the novel attracts me is the language. There are so many

interesting opinions and intelligent thoughts in this novel. In chapter 10, Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bingley and Miss Bingley, They are all sitting in the drawing-room. The conversation begins with Miss Bingley. “The perpetual commendations of the lady either on his handwriting, or on the evenness of his lines, or on the length of his letter, with the perfect unconcern with which her praises were received, formed a curious dialogue, and was exactly in unison with her opinion of each. ” the basic tone in this paragraph is satire. We can see that Miss Bingley must in crash with Mr. Darcy, but Mr. Darcy is very indifferent to her. Then, the

other two joined this conversation, gradually, because of prejudice and misunderstandings, this conversation resort to an argument. When Mr. Darcy smiled, the author described Elizabeth behavior like this: but Elizabeth thought she could perceive that he was rather offended, and therefore checked her laugh. From this, we can see Elizabeth is an intelligent girl. The author uses so many details to shape her characters. This is just one example.

Pride and Prejudice is well-known for its humor and wit. The author

creates many vivid characters. Such as Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Collins, Wickham. You can imagine their behavior when it comes to them. Through the description of the daily talks and doings of young men and women, the author paints their characteristics. Having read this novel, I have a better understanding of Jean Austen.
