Why Being Human is Great

My name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. I love reading, but sometimes I come across books with ideas I don't agree with at all. One book that really bothered me was \"No Longer Human\" by this Japanese writer named Osamu Dazai.

In that book, the main character feels like he's not really human. He says humans are supposed to be sincere, have feelings, and make sense. But he just fakes everything and lives life playing weird games with people. He thinks he's fundamentally different and inferior to normal humans.

Well, I totally disagree with that view! I think being human is wonderful and something to feel lucky about, not ashamed of. We're unique creatures capable of amazing things that no other animal can do. Here are some of the reasons why I love being human:

We Can Learn and Grow Our Whole Lives

One of the best things about humans is how our brains keep developing year after year. We're always learning new skills, figuring out better ways to do things, and understanding the world in deeper ways.

My little sister is only 5 years old and can barely read or write. But I look at how quickly she's picking it up and imagine where she'll be in 5 more years. I think back to when I was her age and how much I've learned since then about math, science, history, and so much more. My brain keeps expanding!

Animals like dogs and cats are cute, but they're basically the same creatures they were when they were born. A dog can be trained some tricks, but it will never learn geometry or how to paint beautiful artwork. Humans have virtually unlimited

potential to grow and improve ourselves over our entire lifetimes. To me, that's one of the most amazing parts of being human. We Can Use Language to Communicate Complex Ideas Another awesome human ability is our sophisticated use of language. We don't just make noises and gestures to get basic points across, like animals do. We have vast vocabularies and can string words together into precise sentences, paragraphs, books, poems, and more.

Using language, we can analyze deep philosophical

questions, describe our thoughts and emotions in intricate detail, and share our knowledge and cultures across generations. We can craft long, complex arguments to persuade others of our views. Language empowers us to explore the depths of our

minds and the intricacies of our experiences in a way other life forms simply cannot.

My dad is a lawyer, and I've watched him artfully make his case in court speeches that combine logic, emotion, examples and more into a powerful message. My mom is a writer and I'm always impressed by her talent for capturing little moments and feelings in beautiful ways with her words. Animals can bark and meow, but they'll never write moving poetry or give a persuasive speech. Isn't human language just incredible? We Can Appreciate Beauty and Create Art

Humans also have this unique ability to perceive, enjoy and create beauty in the form of art, music, dance, and more. We don't just live focused on basic survival tasks, but cultivate a rich inner life filled with aesthetic pleasures.

One of my favorite places is the art museum near our house. I'm always in awe walking through the different galleries, admiring the paintings, sculptures, photographs and

installations. Each one is a window into the vision and creativity of another human mind and soul. The colors, textures, symbolism, and emotions expressed are so rich and moving.

Then I think about all the other forms of human artistic expression - the music that makes me want to sing and dance, the literature that transports me into other worlds, the

architecture that surrounds us with inspiring grandeur. We shape our world to be decorated with art that feeds our spirits, not just our physical bodies. That's a very special trait that sets humans apart.

We Feel Deep Emotions and Can Empathize with Others The character in \"No Longer Human\" claimed to just fake all his emotions, but that idea makes me sad. To me, the ability to feel powerful emotions is a precious part of the human experience that we should celebrate.

I've felt the warm glow of pure happiness, like when I scored the winning goal in my soccer championship game last year. I've been overwhelmed with pride when receiving an award for my academic achievements. I've felt heartbroken when a beloved family member passed away. And I've definitely experienced the joyful butterflies of a first crush! emotions are so vibrant and such an core part of what shapes our perspectives and motivates our actions. We're not just cold, rational robots. Our feelings about love, justice, beauty and more influence how we treat each other and the valuable things we prioritize in life.

Not only can we feel emotions deeply ourselves, but humans also have a special ability to empathize with others' emotions too. We can imagine ourselves in someone else's shoes and share their pain, joy, fear or other feelings. That allows us to be compassionate and humane towards our fellow people in a way animals cannot.

We Can Make Moral Choices and Positive Impact

Because we have language, creativity, rich emotional lives and more, humans also have the profound ability to contemplate moral ideas and use our powers to make the world better in ways other creatures cannot.

My grandpa is someone I really admire because of his kind heart and wisdom. He's always reminded me that having a human brain means we can rationally analyze what's right and wrong. We don't just act through pure instinct or self-interest. We also have the ability to consider ethical principles and philosophies that push us to be good, just, and to care about more than just ourselves.

He's also stressed how human creativity and intelligence give us opportunities to solve problems and make positive change in ways impossible for any animal. He worked his whole career as an environmental engineer, helping design

technologies to reduce pollution and clean up our planet's air and water. He's very proud that his work helped improve millions of human lives by making the Earth a bit greener and more sustainable for our future.

We're also the only species that can really envision grand concepts about how to setup societies, governments, economies and other systems for the flourishing of our local and global communities. We have the cognitive tools to plan and

coordinate progress on a grand scale towards ideals of harmony, peace and human rights.

It's arrogant and silly for the main character to claim not to be \"human\" just because he feels out of step with others at times. Our unique human traits are what enable us to understand the loneliness he feels, and then build connections, philosophies and social structures to overcome alienation. Being Human is a Beautiful Gift

So in conclusion, I think Osamu Dazai's main character in \"No Longer Human\" totally had it backwards. Being human isn't some disability or curse, it's an amazing gift! We're capable of unlimited potential for growth, rich emotional experiences, profound analysis and creativity, ethical reasoning, positive impact on the world, and so much more.

I feel incredibly lucky to have been born a human. While it's not always easy, I'm endlessly fascinated by the journey of exploring all the incredible powers of human consciousness, relationships, and civilization we've developed. I'm proud to be a member of the human race and can't wait to keep learning, growing and experiencing the fullness of our human capacities and experiences.

So to anyone who feels like they're somehow \"not human\" or falls short of human specialness, I say look closer! What you have is precious. Treasure and develop your human consciousness in all its amazing dimensions and glorious potential. That's infinitely better than being any other creature on this planet. Let's celebrate our humanity, not reject it.
