Folklore(民间传说) has long been passed down from one generation to the next. However, the National Trust has shown the development of technology is causing folklore to die out because it has nothing to do with modern life. It says that in a world filled with smartphones and the Internet, legends of magical blacksmiths(铁匠) are no longer of interest to children who have never put coal on the fire.
Jessica Monaghan, head of the National Trust’s Experiences and Programming, called on the public to share their knowledge of folklore from different areas of the UK to keep it alive. “The legends and traditions tell us so much about our ancestors(祖先) and their relationship with the world around them,” she said. “Through the legends, we can learn about what makes communities around the UK special and what has tied us together.”
“In the 16th century, the walnut was taken as a treatment for brain illnesses simply be-cause they are similar in shape. Few people today would believe this because we have advanced medical knowledge and scientific
methods,” said Dee Dee Chainey, author of A Treasury of British Folklore. But she thinks there are still chances for folklore as many people try to learn about old legends.
Folklore should be rewritten and retold in new ways with new characters and new lessons that are related to modern life. And that’s what folklore is about—taking the old wisdom and traditions and redescribing them for who we are and the lives we have now.(
)28.What problem is described in Paragraph 1?
B.Children depend on smartphones much.D.A sense of belonging disappears among kids.B.The power of knowledge.D.The greatness of our ancestors.B.Collecting more interesting folklore.
D.Encouraging children to learn more about folklore.
A.Children misunderstand folklore.C.Folklore disappears slowly in modern life.(
A.The attraction of legends.C.The importance of folklore.(
A.Keeping folklore by making some changes.C.Holding on to old traditions and following them.(
)31.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Folklore isn’t so important as it used to be.
B.It’s time to create new folklore for people in modern life.C.It’s never too late to care about old wisdom and traditions.D.Folklore is dying out because of the rise of modern technology.

Imagine this: you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato when, suddenly, it starts to scream! Although this thing will never really happen, a new study showed that plants can make sounds when they are stressed. Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones(超声波麦克风) to record thousands of tomato plants in boxes.
Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems(茎) cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour at a frequency(频率) of 40 to 80 kilohertz, while the untouched group only made the sound once per hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the team told CNN.
)29.What does Jessica Monaghan want to express in Paragraph 2?
)30.What is the writer’s suggestion according to the last paragraph?
The researchers don’t know how the sounds are made, but they believe the noise comes from the breaking of air bubbles in the plants. This means the noise produced by the plants is not intentional(故意的) or a form of active communication.Although there’s no evidence(证据) that plants can intentionally communicate, animals and insects may be “listening in” to benefit from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress and not suitable to lay eggs on. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to make decisions, according to Science Focus.
After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as wheat, corn and grapevines, and found they also made more sounds when stressed. Researchers said the study can help farmers in the future, as they can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.(
)32.What is the finding of the study by researchers from Tel Aviv University?
B.Some plants can scream.
D.Plants can communicate with each other.B.A group which has its fruits picked.D.A group that has suitable temperature.B.Plants receive messages from animals.D.Air bubbles in the plants can break.B.It will help protect the environment.D.It helps farmers decide what to plant.
A.Plants often feel stressed.
C.Plants can make sounds when they are stressed.(
A.A group that is fully-grown.C.A group that is watered every day.(
A.Plants make sounds on purpose.C.Plants make noise in a high frequency.(
)35.What might be the advantage of the finding?A.It may help improve crop production.C.It can help farmers predict weather.Choose the sentences to complete the passage.(Two sentences are extra.)

The Dyslexia Week
Albert Einstein(1879—1955), Walt Disney(1901—1966), and Pablo Picasso(1881—1973) have something in common. They were all extremely clever, brilliant and creative and they all had dyslexia(阅读困难). Today, around six million people in the UK have some degree of dyslexia. Yet many people aren’t aware of the condition or even don’t realise they have it.
Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW) aims to change that. Starting on 3 October, dyslexia charities across the country will be encouraging conversations about it, giving people advice and support.
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is not an illness or a disease. It is a condition that affects the way a person learns. It doesn’t mean that person isn’t intelligent. It just means that their brain works a little differently. Just like people have different skin, hair and eye colours, the way our brains see the world and handle information can be different too. This is called neurodiversity (神经多样性).
How does dyslexia affect people?
Dyslexia affects people differently. Each person has a unique experience. Some people may have problems with reading, writing and spelling. For example, a person with dyslexia might write the word “pests” as “pets” because their brain confuses the order of letters. They might find it difficult to match letters to sounds or to remember how to spell words.
How might the condition affect daily life?
Dyslexia isn’t just about reading, spelling and writing. It can affect concentration(专注力), coordination(协调性) and memory, which can make everyday life tricky. Dyslexic people might find it hard to copy down lots of notes from a board or to organise written work. They may find it tough to follow lots of instructions or rules when playing a game. However, dyslexia can be discovered by special tests. This is the important first step for people to get the help and support they might need.
What are the positives of having dyslexia?
People diagnosed(诊断) with dyslexia might worry how others see them, but thinking differently can be a superpower. Many people with dyslexia often have strong logical skills and great imaginative ideas. They can be good at spotting patterns and solving problems. They can be super creative too—there are many authors, actors and inventors from every corner of the world who thrive with the condition. Dyslexia is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. It’s part of you.
Use words with proper meanings and grammatical rules to fill in the blanks.(Only one word for one blank.)
61.Many people are diagnosed with dyslexia, including some successful ones in ______. Many of them are not clear about it or even do not ______ their own conditions.
62.Dyslexia Awareness Week starting on 3 October will work to ______ it, helping and ______ people with dyslexia.
63.Dyslexia shouldn’t be ______ for an illness or a disease. It’s a condition that makes people learn ______ as a result of the way their brains see the world and handle information.
64.Dyslexia makes people have ______ reading, writing and spelling. It makes people ______ concentrated, coordinated and affects their memory.

66.I am glad to share my ideas about housework and labor course. Doing housework plays an important part in middle school students’ lives. So I often do housework, such as washing dishes, sweeping the floor, cooking and so on. I think middle school students should do housework. Here are three reasons.
First of all, doing some housework can make us independent, because we can’t depend on others all our life. What’s more, it is a good way to keep us healthy and strong by doing housework. In order to make ourselves better, it is necessary for us to do house-work at home in our free time. As for how to run the course in our school, the school can offer classes to teach us how to do the cleaning, grow plants and make breakfast.

Hello, everyone! May I have your attention, please? Next Monday our class is going to have a trip to Sunshine Farm. The trip will last for five days.
On the farm, we’re going to do some cleaning and help clear away rubbish at first. Then, we’ll learn how to plant trees and grow vegetables. It may be a difficult but interesting job for us. During the trip, we will help the farmers pick apples and pears. Besides the farm work, we can also have a picnic and enjoy ourselves.
But for our safety, we mustn’t go swimming in the river and we should stay together. There are few people around the farm, so nobody is allowed to leave the farm alone.
Wish you a happy trip! That’s all. Thank you!
