Task 1
Television has opened windows in everybody’s life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people have now seen the effects of battle, resulting in a general dislike of war, and more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen.
Television has also changed politics. Even those who live in the most remote place can now follow state affairs, seeing and hearing politicians speak before an election. Better informed, he/she is more likely to vote, making their opinion count.
Unfortunately, television’s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. Children believe and want to practice what they see. They do believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the “television generation”
is more violent than that of their parents and grandparents.
Also, the young are less patient. Since they get used to the entertaining and exciting elements of TV shows, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures, to read a book that requires thinking, or to listen to a teacher who doesn’t do funny things like the people on children’s programs. And young people expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes--- that’s the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people_____.
A. knew the effects of war B. got involved with politics
C. liked to save the wounded in wars D. were willing to be soldiers 2. Now, with TV, people can _______.
A. discuss politics at an information center B. show more interest in politics
C. become better informed than before D. express their opinions freely
3. The author thinks that TV advertisements are _______.
A. not reliable on the whole B. useless to people
C. a good guide for adults D. very harmful to the young
4. Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People have become used to crime now.
B. With a TV set, some problems can be solved quickly. C. People now like to read books with pictures. D. Adults are less violent than the young.
5. From the passage, we can conclude that ________.
A. children should keep away from TV. B. TV programs should be improved C. children’s books should have pictures D. TV has a strong influence on the young Task 2
The producers of instant coffee found their product strongly resisted in the market places despite their product’s obvious advantages. Furthermore, the advertising expenditure for instant coffee was far greater than that for regular coffee. Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers’ seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product. The reason given by most people was dislike for the taste. The producer thought that there might be deeper reasons, however. This was confirmed by one of motivation research’s classic studies, one often cited in the trade.
Mason Haire of the University of California made two shopping lists that were almost the same except for one item. There were
six items common to both lists: hamburger, carrots, bread, baking powder, canned peaches, and potatoes, with the brands or amounts specified. The seventh item, in fifth place on both lists, read “ one pound Maxwell House coffee” on one list and “Nescafe instant coffee” on the other. One list was given to each one in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in the other group of the same size. These women were asked to study their list and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of woman (“personality and character”) who would draw up that shopping list. Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and was a poor planner. On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was probably not a good wife; and no one drew the same conclusion as the women in the “instant coffee” group did abut the housewife who intended to buy regular coffee.
6. In the opinion of instant coffee producers, ________.
A. people should buy regular coffee
B. regular coffee is superior to instant coffee
C. instant coffee should have a good market because of its obvious advantages D. the advertising expenditure for regular coffee is very great

9. Because of the result of this test, the producers of instant coffee would probably advertise to show___________.
A. a lazy wife drinking instant coffee B. a stupid wife using instant coffee
C. a hard-working woman drinking instant coffee D. a good wife using regular coffee
10. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. It is reasonable for people to resist instant coffee.
B. Advertising does not always assure favorable sales results. C. People pay little attention to advertising.
D. Regular coffee has better taste than instant coffee. Task 3
Directions: Read the following passage as fast as you can and then decide whether the statements that follow are True or False according to the passage. Then give answer on the Answer Sheet.
People who visit the United States sometimes wonder how the states got their names. Some of the most interesting names came from the American Indian language. For example, Illinois was named by the Indians who used to live in that part of the country. In their language, Illinois means “brave man”. While Connecticut means “at the long river-mouth” in the language of the Indians who used to live there.
Twenty-five of the states have Indian names, but other names were taken from different languages. Georgia and Pennsylvania have names that were taken from the Latin language. Florida and Colorado were named by Spanish people. States like New Hampshire and New Jersey were named after the places in England.
The two newest states have names that did not come from any of those languages: Hawaii got its name from a word in the Hawaiian language that means “homeland”; Alaska was named by the Russians, from whom Alaska was bought in 1867. 11. Task 4
Most (researchers) have settled on stress and what they call “Type-A” behavior as the prime candidates for psychological causes of heart attacks. A person who shows Type-A behavior is highly competitive, feels pressured for time, and reacts to frustration with hostility. My research focuses on the interplay between the Type-A personality, life stress, and heart attack.
In order to classify people as Type A or Type B, I use their responses to questions about their ambitions, competitiveness, sense of being pressed for time, and hostile feelings. Type-A people, for example, are likely to set deadlines or quotas for themselves at work or at home at least once per week, while Type-B people do so only occasionally. A Type-A person brings his work home with him frequently, a Type-B almost never. The Type-A person is highly achievement-oriented and pushes himself to near capacity, while the Type-B person takes it easy. Harding-driving Type-A students earn more academic honors than their Type-B counterparts, though they are no more intelligent. The Type-A behavior pattern earns the person the rewards he seeks, but at a cost to his body that may be the death of him. Obviously, not all Type-A people have heart attacks, but there are certain times, especially when they come under severe stress, when their risk of heart attack is greatest. 16. The word “candidates” (line 2, para. 1) in this passage means ________. A. most suitable persons B. great capabilities C. most probable factors D. reasonable proposals
17. Type-A people achieve more success than Type-B people because ________. A. they are cleverer
B. they prefer to work at home
C. they are healthier and more energetic D. they always work under stress
18. Compared with Type-B, Type-A people are _______. A. more often found in a bad mood B. easier to get alone with
C. characterized by constant high spirit D. characterized by lack of self-confidence
19. In the second paragraph, the expression to take it easy means _______. A. to stop working altogether B. to lose heart easily
C. to achieve great success without effort D. to relax and not do very much at all
20. The writer of this passage seems to be _______. A. criticizing Type-B people for their laziness B. praising Type-B people for their life style
C. warning Type-A people against their risk of heart attack
D. encouraging Type-A people to work harder
