San Diego Zoo has been a lovely home for giant(巨大)pandas since two of the black-and-white bears came to visit in 1987. This week, there was snow in San Diego—well, at least for a lucky group of giant pandas.

Over 15 tons of snow was blown into the San Diego Zoo’s panda area on Tuesday morning to give the endangered bears a chance to play. They would experience the snow just like living in their natural habitat(栖息地).The snow day was a first for Xiao Liwu, whose name means “Little Gift”. He was the sixth baby panda born to Bai Yun. Xiao Liwu was jumping on her mom, playing with her and getting used to being thrown in the snow by her mom. Jennifer Becerra, a keeper of San Diego Zoo, said, “He was really enjoying the snow and running around. I’ve never seen him so excited.”

All the San Diego Zoo’s giant pandas are from China, as part of a long—term captive breeding(人工繁育) program. Four of Xiao Liwu’s brothers have already been moved from California to China.

Today, there are 44 giant pandas living in zoos outside of China, which is the bears’ only natural home. As just 1,600 pandas are thought to be left in the wild, researchers insist(强调)that captive breeding is an important way to study and protect the endangered pandas. Not only because of the habitat loss(减少)from human activities and low reproductive rates(繁殖率), giant pandas’ survival(幸存)is also affected(影响)by climate change—a study showed that global(全球)warming could kill much of the bears’ main food, bamboo, over the next century.

10. What does the underlined word “climate” mean in Chinese?

A. 习惯 B. 气候 C. 地址 D. 传统

11. Which of the following might NOT put giant pandas in danger?

A. Low reproductive rates. B. The loss of habitat.

12. What can we know from the passage?

B. Captive breeding is the most useful way to protect giant pandas.

C. China is the only natural home of giant pandas.

D. Xiao Liwu’s brothers now all live in China.

13. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. Giant pandas in San Diego Zoo.

B. Some endangered bears around the world.

C. The purpose of the captive breeding program.

D. Some bad results of human activities.

【答案】10. B 11. D 12. C 13. A

【解析】这篇文章讲述了生活在圣地亚哥动物园的大熊猫,为了给它们一个玩耍的机会,人们给它们送来了很多的雪,它们玩得非常高兴。

10. 词义猜测题。根据“a study showed that global(全球)warming could kill much of the bears’ main food, bamboo, over the next century”可知,全球变暖会让它们的主要食物变少,也就是它们的幸存会受气候的影响,所以climate表示“气候”,故选B。

11. 细节理解题。根据“Not only because of the habitat loss(减少)from human activities

and low reproductive rates(繁殖率), giant pandas’ suryvival(幸存)is also affected(影响)by climate change—a study showed that global(全球)warming could kill much of the bears’ main food, bamboo”可知,人类活动,低繁殖率和气候都会对其有影响,故选D。

Over 100 panda fans sang Happy Birthday as they celebrated the 38th birthday of Xin Xing at Chongqing Zoo on August 16th, 2020. Xin Xing enjoyed a cake made of ice covered by her favorite foods, including bamboo leaves and shoots, apples, carrots and watermelon.

A pandas average age in the wild is 14-20 years. Xin Xing is the world’s oldest giant panda. A panda of 38 years old is like a person of about 110 to 130 years old. Xin Xing is expected to break the Guinness world record. Good genes (基因) and special scientific care are probably the main reasons for Xin Xing to live so long.

Xin Xing, born in Sichuan Province in 1982, was saved in the wild and sent to Chongqing Zoo in 1983. She visited Canada during the 1988 Winter Olympics, where she attracted over 1 million visitors. She is also a hero mom, having given birth to 10 pandas.

Now she is in good physical condition and she is going to 100 kg in weight. She eats

seven meals a day, including 30 kg of bamboo shoots, 1 kg of bamboo leaves and some fruit. The zoo also pays much attention to her health, including daily blood pressure checks.

“We spend so much time together, and she is like a family member to me,” said Zhang Naicheng, who has looked after her for 28 years. In recent years, Zhang has spent most of his nights staying in Xin Xing’s panda house in case she needs him. “It’s hard work, but I have fun looking after the panda,” he said. Since she is too old to eat the hard skin of the bamboo shoots, the zookeepers choose fresh bamboo leaves that they can cut into small pieces.Xin Xing’s 38th birthday encourages people to try to protect the animals, especially those in danger.

14. What do we know about Xin Xing’s 38th birthday?

① Fans sang a song for her. ② It was celebrated at the zoo.

③ She enjoyed a birthday cake. ④ It broke the world record.

16. What does Zhang Naicheng think of his job?

A. Hard and boring. B. Easy but boring.

C. Hard but interesting. D. Easy and interesting.

17. What can we learn from this special birthday?

A. We should hold a special birthday celebration for every panda.

B. The animals in danger need good protection.

C. Pandas should live in zoos instead of living in the wild.

D. Good genes are the only reason for Xin Xing to live so long.

【答案】14. A 15. D 16. C 17. B

There are twice as many giant pandas as before.

The giant panda is one of the world’s most endangered animals. In fact, it is known all over the world as the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund(WWF), an international organization that protects endangered animals.

Here is some good news:the number of giant pandas—China’s most famous animal—is increasing. The latest facts show that there are now about 1,600 giant pandas living in the wild. This is twice as many as before. Much of this success is because of the environmental organizations like the WWF.

At the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in Chengdu, scientists work hard to find ways to look after these special animals.85% of the world’s giant pandas live in the southwestern hills and mountains of China. Bamboo forests also grow here. The research center has been built on the edge of these forests. Its main object is to increase the number of

giant pandas. As these young giant pandas grow up, they are taught the necessary skills bamboo forests to live a normal life.

A giant panda eats as much as 20 kilos of food per day and spends between 12 and 16 hours eating. So for this program to be successful, more forests that are suitable as habitats for giant pandas must be found. In April of 2000, about 23,000 square kilometers of forest was chosen in Sichuan, Shanxi and Gansu Provinces. And five new areas have been named as nature reserves in the Qinling Mountains. There are now more than 40 areas that protect giant pandas:37 more than 15 years ago. Still , everyone must continue to work hard to protect one of China’s most important national treasures—the giant panda.

C. No,we shouldn’t. D. Yes,we should.

【答案】18. C 19. B 20. C 21. B 22. D

Last summer, I joined the SSP Panda Volunteer Camp and travelled to Chengdu, Sichuan.

Our volunteer work began on August 7. Early in the morning, my teammates and I arrived at Wolong National Panda Nature Reserve. It's the biggest panda reserve in China. The workers there told us many interesting facts about the animals.

Pandas are lovely, but they are very lazy. Every day, they spend about ten hours sleeping and twelve hours eating. Yes, they only spend two hours doing exercise!

Pandas like to eat carrots and bamboo. They eat as much as they can. No wonder they are very fat!

We helped the workers at the reserve feed the pandas and clean the yards where the animals lived and played. My job was to pick up the leftover bamboo and replace it with fresh bamboo. The temperature at the reserve was high. It took me about half an hour to finish my tasks. It was truly tiring and I sweated a lot.

We also visited the panda exhibition room. We learned about different kinds of bamboo. We found out pandas' favorites as well as why baby pandas die so easily.
