有些事情似乎很难改变。比如说，当人类面临危机时，往往把自己的生命放在第一位考虑，在难以周全的情况下，总会牺牲其他动物的生命，即便它们刚刚救过自己的命。《南极大冒险》中，那8只忠心耿耿的雪橇犬就在南极科考队遭遇暴风雪紧急撤退时被暂时放弃了。当然，队员们当时的想法是，救人要紧！当时必须把在雪地考察中受伤的杰里和博士送回医疗条件足够的总部医院去，然后再驾直升机回基地接那8只雪橇犬——它们刚在考察中神勇地救过博士和杰里。
可是，飞机没有能再次回到基地。同样还是那个道理：有些事情很难改变。比如说，当人类决定是否去做一件事情时，会权衡利弊，而不会意气用事不顾一切。因为罕见的恶劣天气，南极科考队总部取消了一切任务，拒绝出动飞机冒险去救8只狗，理由很简单：救人还来不及呢！
与雪橇犬朝夕相处的主人杰里很难接受这个事实，他四处奔波，试图说服上级雪橇犬是科考队的成员，可还是无法改变什么。他还想到另辟蹊径，请求那位博士拨出部分科研款项帮助他再次回到南极，他以为博士会顾念雪橇犬的救命之恩，可他最后一丝希望也破灭了。博士告诉他科研款项不能浪费在不切实际的事情上，还劝慰他接受现实。整个世界都跟杰里作对，他只能放弃了，把自己放逐到麻木的工作中去——人毕竟还是要面对现实。
可是那些可爱的雪橇犬的身影还是无法从心中抹去，杰里坐卧不安，陷入消沉。于是他去拜访了最早养育这些雪橇犬的老人，在那儿听到的一个故事改变了他。故事讲的是一个人带着他的4条爱犬进森林捕猎，不幸受到一只黑熊的袭击。当那人从昏迷中醒来时，发现有2只狗为了保护他而牺牲了，黑熊和另2只狗却不见踪影。那人恢复后开始四处寻找另外那2只狗，找了很久。有人劝他放弃，告诉他那已经没有什么意义了。可他仍然坚持，哪怕爱犬已经死去，他也要找到它们，因为唯有这样他才能求得内心的平静。听完这个故事后，杰里终于知道怎样才能使自己的内心真正获得平静。他决定立即返回南极，靠自己的力量！无论多么困难，这世上总有些东西值得他不顾一切地去做。
当杰里破除万难回到基地，与6只存活下来的雪橇犬重逢时，那个场面让我激动得热泪盈眶，几乎想要欢呼。要知道，那时雪橇犬在零下8度的暴风雪中已经生存了整整180天！180天，在沙漠般死寂的雪原，它们并肩战斗，从未失去对生的渴望，并且仍然相信主人会回来。让人庆幸的是，6条雪橇犬终于等到了那一刻；让人难受的是，有2位那样可爱的伙伴永远留在了那里。在死亡的威胁下，那些雪橇犬表现得那样勇敢那样坚强那样团结，难以用言语和文字表达，只有看过电影的人才有切身的感受，那就是：恨不得立刻插上翅膀去极地解救它们！
